Artist statement

Dyspraxia is an unknown condition to most, but a very real struggle for others. Imagine that you are the only one, in a room full of people, who is without a tool kit. You manage to make your tools and begin the task at hand but look around again and realize that the rest of the group is over halfway finished. You are now frustrated, and your hands are shakey, your mind is elsewhere, and you want to give up. What do you choose to do?

This study is a visual description of the struggles I face as a makeup artist through my lack of coordination, balance, symmetry, and organization, but also the differences I must endure through day-to-day life in comparison to those of neurotypical brain function. Through captured mark-making and research-supported video performance, you will be able to trace the movements of dyspraxia in an educational yet gratifying performance.

The aim of this work is to educate the audience on the reality of dyspraxia and highlight the beauty that can be seen within. Beautiful pieces created by the models during the process are showcased in the positivity of dyspraxia and acceptance that dyspraxia doesn’t need to be seen as a struggle but more as a potential for creativity, power, and beauty.

This series of imagery is based on official tests that are carried out in dyspraxia assessments, which have been artistically exaggerated to pronounce the value of movement towards dyspraxia. I encourage you to repeat what you see in the videos to assist you in understanding the mind of someone with dyspraxia.

Through my studies I have created many personal pieces that often centre themselves around personal emotive subjects, therefore I decided to write and create my final source about my largest accomplishment at university. Creating outsider art ensured that I felt equally yet strongly confident in my work as I am with myself after growing as an artist at university. Other work is showcased on my Instagram page, this includes all imagery of progression and growth as a professional makeup artist and showcases Shannon Elliott in a light that allows others to see the journey that I have taken to reach my end goal with joy.
